Edward Omane Boamah, Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has alleged that a political party is plotting to print 2.5 million illegal ballot papers ahead of Ghana’s December 7 elections.

Speaking to Channel One TV on December 1, 2024, following an emergency Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, Dr. Omane revealed that the NDC had been tracking intelligence for the past seven months. The intelligence suggested that a political party was planning to produce counterfeit ballots for the upcoming election.

Dr. Omane also pointed out that the defaced ballot paper discovered in the Eastern Region might have been part of a broader strategy to study the security features of the official ballots.

He suggested that this could be an attempt to replicate the ballots in a way that would make them indistinguishable from the legitimate ones.

“We have been tracking a particular intel for about 7 months now that a particular political party seeks to print about 2.5 million ballot papers illegally. So, could it be that with this single ballot, they wanted to know the identity and the security features of the ballot so that they could mimic it and escape detection during ballot sorting on December 7.

“At a point that political party was even contemplating whether to go ahead or not. Eventually, they decided to go ahead. We are still tracking and we are confident that if they go ahead and see to the distribution, we shall effect arrest and hand them over to lawful authority,” he stated.
