The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has challenged the economic claims of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.
Dr. Bawumia questioned Mahama’s understanding of economic data following assertions that the NDC’s track record in government surpasses that of the NPP.
Dr. Bawumia made these remarks during a campaign rally at the newly inaugurated Koforidua Jackson Park in New Juaben South.
The event, held two days after President Nana Akufo-Addo officially commissioned the facility, drew thousands of supporters.
He touted the free SHS policy stressing that the quality of education has improved despite the astronomical increase in the numbers
“When we were coming to power, we promised Ghanaians Free Senior High School Education. Former President John Mahama stated that we were deceiving Ghanaians and that Free SHS was not possible. But I mentioned that it is possible.
“For 8 years now, we stuck to our promise. Over 5 million students have benefitted from the Free Senior High School policy. If we had paid attention to John Mahama there wouldn’t have been any Free SHS. During his tenure, schools didn’t have even chalk but we are purchasing computer tablets for every senior high school student.
“Every teacher is getting a laptop. This has never happened before. Ghana is now number 2 in Africa in terms of quality education”, he said.
“He claims he did better than us so I asked if he understands economic data. We have created more jobs than you.
“More agriculture, more industry, more roads, more railway, more airports, more hospitals, more classrooms, more fibre-optic cable, more sanitation facilities, more Zongo development, more public libraries, we have done more of everything than you.
“That is why I said that if he believes he did better he should come for us to debate. But he’s been running away”, he stated.
