The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has released a list of accredited health facilities nationwide that will provide free dialysis treatment beginning December 1, 2024.
The facilities include Hart Adventist Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, FirstCare Hospital, Holy Family Hospital (Berekum), Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Eastern Regional Hospital, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, 37 Military Hospital, and Newtown Islamic Hospital Ltd.
Others on the list are Ghana Police Hospital, Trust Hospital Premium Centre, Ridge Regional Hospital, International Maritime Hospital, Tamale Teaching Hospital, Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, Upper West Regional Hospital, Ho Teaching Hospital, Volta Regional Hospital in Hohoe, Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, and Takoradi Hospital.
This initiative follows Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s announcement that, from December 1, 2024, the government will offer free dialysis treatment to all kidney patients covered under the NHIS.
Dr. Bawumia reiterated the government’s commitment to alleviating the financial burden of kidney treatment, a challenge many patients and families face. The new policy builds on a pilot programme initiated earlier this year, which provided free dialysis for patients under 18 and those over 60 years old.
Under the expanded policy, all registered kidney patients with NHIS will qualify for free dialysis, a move aimed at improving accessibility and reducing financial strain.
