The Deputy Director of Research at the Electoral Commission (EC), Fred Tetteh, has assured the public that the EC remains committed to delivering credible elections despite recent challenges, including reports of ballot paper shortages in five constituencies in the Volta Region and a broken seal on electoral materials in the Eastern Region.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Saturday, November 30, 2024, Mr Tetteh acknowledged the concerns but emphasized that the EC, as a human institution, is not immune to errors.
He explained that such anomalies are not new, noting that occasional errors have occurred during the EC’s preparations in the past.
However, he suggested that the intense scrutiny from the media in recent times has amplified the perception of these issues.
Mr. Tetteh assured the public that the EC is working diligently to resolve the identified issues and that measures are being taken to prevent a recurrence.
He also called for public understanding and support, reiterating the Commission’s commitment to a transparent and fair electoral process.
“I have been in this system since 1996, and if I could be clear with the question that you were asking. Do we feel pressured? I don’t think so. I can give you a chronology of some of the things that happened from 1996 to date.
“As the Chair said, we are a human institution and yes there is public expectation for perfection but you cannot have a perfect society or a perfect organisation anywhere. I must say that there are things we overlooked as far back as so many years from 1996 when some of these kinds of things were coming up.
“But now, it seems like with the vibrant media space that we have, something small is overblown. I know that we will get there, we are getting there and for sure we are prepared”, he stated.
