The Ministry of Railway Development has noted that the managers of the Tema-Mpakadan rail line and the two-diesel multiple-unit trains will adhere to all safety protocols once the track is fully operational.
According to the Ministry’s Communications Director, Naa Kwarley-Quartey, the train service will operate on a ‘Tap-and-Go’, cashless system.
Speaking to the media ahead of a tour of the facility, Kwarley-Quartey urged all stakeholders to ensure the effective management of the project.
“It’s a new thing that we have new DMU trains and of course, we see new lines, standard gauge lines. Railway is an integral part of the growth of our economy. For us at the Ministry of Railways, these new lines you see, and the trains are not going to be there like a white elephant but are going to be of good use. We have a ticketing system; we will take you through the process. It is the ‘Tap and Go’ system. Most of the time people ask, ‘when it comes to ticketing people hold the money, we give the money to people,’ this time around, it is not the same. We are going to use the international standard which is the ‘Tap and Go’ system.
“We are going to focus extensively on safety. The indiscipline on our part as citizens is way too much. When it comes to railways there are a lot of safety measures. We will make sure all those safety measures are ensured. We are appealing to Ghanaians; this is a good thing for our country. Regardless of our political colour and divide, it is important, and we should all see to it that this train system benefits all of us and generations to come,” she stated.
The newly completed 97-kilometre standard gauge railway line connects seven stations along the Tema-Mpakadan route. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to phase out outdated narrow gauge rail systems and replace them with more efficient and modern infrastructure.
