Presidential candidates for Ghana’s 2024 general elections gathered in Accra on Thursday to sign the 4th Peace Pact, an agreement to ensure peaceful elections.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were present at the Kempinski Hotel to personally endorse the pact.
The event, organised by the National Peace Council and the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG), was attended by dignitaries, including Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, Chief Imam Sheik Nuhu Sharabutu, former ECOWAS President Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, and Electoral Commission Chair Jean Mensa.
Other presidential aspirants and stakeholders also participated, highlighting their commitment to a peaceful democratic process.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) had earlier expressed reservations about signing the Peace Pact ahead of Ghana’s 2024 general elections unless certain conditions were met.
The conditions included the full implementation of recommendations from the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election inquiry and the Prosecution of individuals involved in violence during the 2020 elections, including the deaths of eight people.
The NDC justified its stance by highlighting previous instances where peace agreements were not adequately upheld, particularly during the 2020 elections, which they claim led to unresolved incidents of violence and mistrust.
The party emphasised that addressing these issues is crucial for ensuring a credible and peaceful election.
