President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama to publicly commit to accepting the outcome of this year’s elections.
Akufo-Addo pointed out that he set an example by accepting the results of the 2008 and 2012 elections, extending congratulations to Mahama on both occasions to ensure peace prevailed.
Speaking to a gathering of Chiefs and clergy in Koforidua on Thursday, November 28, President Akufo-Addo assured that the 2024 elections will be free and fair, reiterating that election rigging is not part of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) agenda.
“He claims if he doesn’t win the election, it means the NPP has rigged. Then why the need to cast our votes in the first place? Let’s declare him the winner then. In 2008, I lost the election by 23,000. I was the presidential candidate of the ruling party then. I accepted so that the country could move on. In 2012 I went to court over an election I believed I had won but the Supreme Court took a 5-4 majority decision. I accepted the results and congratulated you.
“Rigging is not in our diary. It is not in our vocabulary. The election will be free and fair, whoever wins, wins. Let’s hear from him that whatever the result of the election, he will accept the results of the election. That is what we want to hear him say if he wants to contribute to the peace of the country. Not to make statements like this else he is weaponising the extreme elements in the party”
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has stated that he’s hopeful of inaugurating two or three Agenda 111 projects before he leaves office.
According to him, 70% of Agenda 111 projects across the country including 9 new district hospitals in the Eastern Region are 85% complete.
Speaking at a meeting with the Clergy and stakeholders in Koforidua as part of his ‘Thank You’ Tour, Nana Addo took a dig at former President John Dramani Mahama for doubting his initiatives. He indicated that health infrastructure in the country is being expanded to create more access at the local level.
“Since we announced the programme up till now there has been 70% minimum completion of Agenda 111 projects across Ghana. Nine new district hospitals under Agenda 111 are due in the Eastern Region; Abomosu, Akyem Swedru, Ofoase, Apeguso, Manso, Osino, Tease, Adeiso and Abetifi and there are various stages of completion from 85% onwards.
“I pray that by the time I leave office by 7th January, two or three of these hospitals are commissioned before I go. The health infrastructure in our country has now been expanded by building a health infrastructure for the 21st Century so that every part of this country can have access to quality healthcare”, he stated.
