Residents of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region have emphasised the importance of peace as Ghana approaches the December general election.

In an interview with Channel One News, they urged fellow citizens to prioritise harmony and avoid actions that could incite tension.

They also rejected calls by political parties encouraging voters to remain at polling stations until counting is completed, citing a waste of time and the need to trust the electoral process especially, having polling agents.

“Our politicians always mislead the youth, especially the non-elites. You can’t tell an elite that your party was cheated so they should go and demonstrate. I plead with the youth to remain calm after the declaration of the results since this is not going to be our last election. We have nowhere to go so we must live in peace not in pieces,” stated Opanin Kwame Sarfo, a resident of Kumasi.

Adding “In my view, there is no need to stay behind after casting your ballot. For instance, why will you wait till 5:30 pm after casting your vote at 10 am when you are not a polling agent.”

“They were first Ghanaians before they became party members so they should choose peace over everything. No matter what the flagbearer promises, Ghana comes first. Ghana is a peaceful country, and I suggest we keep that because if anything happens after the elections, it is we the citizens that are going to struggle. It is better to keep the peace because we were first Ghanaians before we became party men,” Deborah Konadu, a resident of Kumasi admonished.

“I thought that was the function of the polling agent, they are there to ensure that no electoral malpractice happens. If I am an electorate and I go and vote and afterwards stay back for that long, it is not going to be good for me because I have other things to do. Mind you election day is not a holiday, I have work to do,” she added.
