The President of the National Peace Council (NPC), Rev Dr Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, has called for a genuine commitment to peace from all presidential candidates as they sign the Peace Pact ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Rev Dr Adu-Gyamfi emphasised that the agreement must not merely serve as a symbolic gesture but should translate into concrete actions during and after the elections.
He highlighted the significance of the pact as a pledge to avoid inciting violence, especially in cases of dissatisfaction with the election results.
He urged the candidates to utilise legal and appropriate channels to resolve grievances, reiterating that violence poses a threat to the country’s democratic progress and must be avoided at all costs.
“I have argued that Ghana is blessed to have leaders who will always choose the nation above their personal and party interests when it matters the most. Today, the ceremony is a testament to the commitment of the presidential candidates to a peaceful election and a peaceful country. It is a commitment to the fact that when we are not satisfied with the outcome of any election result, we will not motivate our supporters to resort to violence but will use the appropriate means to resolve our concerns.
“Resorting to violence is inimical and must be avoided at all costs. I hope that signing this pact will not be just another public show but that all our aspiring presidential candidates will play their roles effectively, particularly after the declaration of the election outcomes on December 7 2024,” he stated.
