The Ghana Armed Forces have sought to allay concerns regarding their role in the upcoming elections. Some stakeholders had raised fears about the potential deployment of soldiers to polling stations, but the military has clarified that they will not be stationed at these locations.

However, during an engagement between the Election Security Taskforce and the University Teachers Association of Ghana, the Head of Operations, Training, and Peacekeeping at the Armed Forces Headquarters, Brigadier General Kweku Dankwa Hagan, stated that the military would intervene in cases of unrest, but only upon the request of the police.

“We are mindful of the fact that some section of the population is apprehensive of military personnel taking part in the election. I want to clarify that the election is primarily under the police service and other security services under the Ministry of Interior.

“They are the people who will be seen at the polling stations. You will not see military personnel like me at the polling station so please be rest assured that we shall not be there.

“However, we have identified with the police service and the electoral commission on more than 1000 flashpoints and…we are going to have personnel there who will not intervene in anything until the police service requests that we assist.

“I want to assure you that we are as humane we you are, we are not going there to molest anybody”, he assured.
