Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has rejected calls urging him to refrain from commenting on the 2024 elections. This comes after backlash following his endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Critics including Movement for Change flagbearer Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, had suggested that, due to his statesmanship, he should avoid making such public endorsements.

However, during a campaign event with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh in the Abuakwa South constituency at Ofori Panin Fie, the former president stood by his endorsement of Dr. Bawumia.

“I believe old age is the season of in-depth knowledge and maturity. But currently, people have problems with me addressing situations arguing that I am a statesman.

“I am facing criticism for voicing my opinions on national matters due to my position as a statesman. Experience and wisdom are often associated with age.

“The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is my political affiliation, and it was through this party that I attained the presidency. Additionally, my child, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has been elected through the party.

“During my administration, he was a member of the Bank of Ghana team and demonstrated remarkable performance during a challenging period when Ghana was in financial distress. Their efforts were instrumental in revitalizing the economy at that time.”
