Transport operators in the Volta Region have expressed their readiness for the upcoming elections, with arrangements in place to facilitate the movement of people across various locations.
The unions have urged their drivers to avoid engaging in partisan politics during working hours to prevent any potential incidents that could disrupt operations.
Additionally, the Ghana Police Service has assured the public of robust security measures before, during, and after the elections. These measures include routine checks to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of activities during the election period.
Chairman of the Cooperative Drivers Association in Ho, Gabriel Fiankor, said that although their drivers will not partake in the special voting on December 2, their drivers will be available on December 7, to transport passengers to their destinations.
“We are not part of the special voters. But we as drivers will go to our various centres to vote and come back here. It doesn’t affect business because most of our drivers have their centres here at the station”
Mr. Fiankor, however, cautioned drivers, urging them to refrain from engaging in unnecessary partisan political discussions or activities while on duty.
He emphasized that such actions could lead to unnecessary tensions or conflicts, potentially disrupting their services and creating unforeseen circumstances and called for professionalism to ensure a safe and peaceful election season.
“We have advised our drivers not to engage in political arguments when driving and we also caution passengers to limit their political talks during the journey. We value the lives we carry so we have to warn both drivers and passengers”
The Tricycle Riders Association also indicated that they will be providing free services on Election Day for voters.
Francis Alaga, regional chairman for the National Union for Tricycle Operators, said, they have been provided with fuel by some political parties and other institutions to enable them to provide free services to the residents.
“Some leaders from NDC are providing us with fuel so we carry people to their various polling stations without taking any money from them. The union is so happy because we want to assist in this election. We are using 250 tricycles”, he stated.
