Coffin makers in the Subin community have raised concerns about what they describe as a lack of government support for their trade, a key pillar of the local economy.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Community Forum on Tuesday, November 26, the artisans highlighted the significance of the trade to the Subin economy, explaining its reach beyond local markets.

However, they noted that the cost of doing business, and fear of evacuation among others, have negatively impacted their business.

Nana Baafi, a coffinmaker, expressed frustration over the insufficient intervention from authorities regarding their woes.

“Our major occupation here is coffin making. It is a very big business that has employed and trained many. I can say for a fact that coffin-making is a key contributor to the economy of Subin. We sell coffins to Accra and even export to Abidjan in Cote D’Ivoire.

“Now things have changed and on top of that, they want to evict us. If we are evicted, what will happen to these apprentices we are training? In fact, this current government has not helped us,” he stated.

Kwabena Sarpong Akosah, another coffinmaker, acknowledged the challenges posed by rising costs but maintained a pragmatic stance.

“The prices of the raw materials we use for the coffins have gone up. But for us, we see it as a normal thing. As we all know, the economy is hard everywhere, so just like I will buy the materials at very high prices when I am selling my coffin, I will also sell it at a higher process to make a profit,” he also said.

Amos Abbwe, who is also a coffinmaker, added: “I will look at the things the government has done and vote on those issues. Some of their decision has negatively affected us, whereas I have benefitted from others.
