President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to combating illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking at the first-ever congregation of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) at Somanya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region on Sunday, he highlighted his government’s multifaceted approach, emphasising the use of technological innovations and community partnerships to address the menace.

“The fight against illegal mining (galamsey) is another area where we are taking decisive action. The damage caused by illegal mining to our water bodies, farmlands, and ecosystem cannot be overstated,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

Adding “Through technological innovations such as drone surveillance and community partnerships, we are intensifying efforts to curb this menace. We are not only enforcing the law but are also promoting responsible mining practices that align with environmental sustainability.”

President Akufo Addo also indicated that the government was committed to addressing the infrastructure challenges of the school and noted the construction of a 440-bed residential hall which when completed would alleviate the accommodation challenge.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Eric Nyarko Simpson beseeched the president to ensure stalled construction works on the phase two of the school and other GETFUND projects resumed.

He also pleaded with the president to intervene for the university to receive the seed capital promised them after the commencement of their operations.
