Students at the Somé Senior High School in Agbozume are enduring severe congestion in their dormitories due to a lack of adequate infrastructure to accommodate the growing population of the school.

The overcrowding has reached critical levels, forcing about 20 students to share a dormitory space designed for far fewer occupants.

This situation has sparked concerns among students and staff about the potential health risks associated with such conditions.

The male and female dormitories are overcrowded, with students forced to sleep in crammed conditions.

Beds are tightly packed, leaving little room for movement, and many students are left to sleep on the floor due to a lack of proper bunk beds.

With limited ventilation and overcrowded sleeping arrangements, students fear the rapid spread of diseases should there be an outbreak of any communicable illness.

A student, Christopher Adorsu, told Channel One News, they “don’t have enough beds in the boys’ dormitory.”

According to him, “some students now sleep on the floor with their mattresses.”

Whilst appealing for the students’ dormitory, the school’s Senior House Master, Biron Kokutse, indicated that the plight of the teaching staff is equally concerning.

“The school lacks bungalows for the teachers. Even as a senior house master, I don’t stay on campus, so if something happens at night, I have to rush here. This situation affects our ability to be readily available for the students and fully invest in our teaching responsibilities,” he added.

The headmaster of the school, Spencer Agbemenu, has thus called on stakeholders to come to the aid of the school.
