The Ashanti Regional Imam of the Ghana Armed Forces, Captain Mohammed Yussif, has urged Muslims to vote responsibly in the upcoming elections, emphasising that each person has one vote.
Speaking with the press on Saturday, November 23, at the ‘Peaceful Election Forum to Advocate for Peace and Unity Among Zongos Ahead of the December Election’ at Aboabo in the Ashanti region, Captain Mohammed cautioned against accepting bribes in exchange for votes, calling it a betrayal of Islamic principles.
“Let me tell you, in the tradition of Prophet Mohammed, he is reported to have said that cursed be the one who pays bribe and takes bribe.
“So you, as a Muslim, should not allow yourself to be bribed. That means you know the weight of the curse of your prophet and so we should distance ourselves from that. We should stop taking bribes, and we should stop committing crimes.”
Additionally, he revealed that he has been engaging with mosque leaders in the Greater Kumasi, spreading a message of peace and unity during this election period.
“I am handling three big mosques here in Kumasi. And the one at Sabon Zongo, I am the one handling it. So I have reached out to them. I have reached out to my soldiers. We have gone to the Police Church, and reached out to them and everybody.
“Wherever I find myself, I echo this to people. They should know the importance of voting, and they should cherish the importance of the peace we have here.”
