The Ghana Police Service has today, 23rd November 2024, arrested Oheneba Nana Asiedu, a Kumasi-based radio and television presenter.

According to the police, his arrest is for offences including the publication of false news, contrary to section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

The police had earlier extended an invitation to the Kumasi-based radio and television presenter to assist in ongoing investigations regarding the dissemination of false information related to the upcoming December 7, 2024, general elections.

This move followed the circulation of a video on social media that gained attention from both law enforcement authorities and concerned citizens.

In the video, Asiedu is seen at the studios of Wontumi FM, a radio station in Kumasi, making statements that encourage voters to cast their ballots for presidential candidates on separate days during the upcoming elections.

According to the police statement issued on Friday November 22, these assertions were factually inaccurate and misleading.

The Police described the content of the video as “false and likely to disturb the public peace,” particularly in the politically sensitive period leading up to the December 7 elections.

In an update on Saturday November 23, the police said the suspect was in its custody.

“The case will be presented before the court for him to face justice,” the police added.
