Dr Sharif Mahmud Khalid, a member of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Economic and Finance Committee, has criticised the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP)-led government for hastily inaugurating infrastructure projects such as the Bank of Ghana’s new head office and the Flower Pot Interchange.
He described such inaugurations as “panic response” to the NDC’s growing influence and effective campaign messaging to Ghanaians.
According to Dr Khalid, the recent surge in project inaugurations across the country reflects the NPP’s desperation to counter the NDC’s positive reception among Ghanaians.
Dr Khalid, in an interview on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, claimed the projects were rushed to completion despite being far from finished.
He argued that this behaviour is an indication of the government’s disregard for due process, quality, and safety standards.
He believes that prioritising optics over substance poses risks to public safety and undermines confidence in governance.
Dr Khalid stressed “You have the NDC’s flagbearer in his grand style where he is touching lives and communicating the real issues that Ghanaians face and that is going down well, and so all these commissioning of projects are in response to the good message that the NDC is transmitting around the length and breadth of the country and that is the response to which you are seeing all of this rush in commissioning of projects that are not even up maturity stages.
“If you look at the Flower Pot interchange commissioning, it is laughable that you put murals on walls and pillars overnight and you go around, and drains are not still completed and slabs are not closed. How reckless could the president be when you even link this to health and safety standards to commission this road to be used?”
