The management of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has called for public support to procure additional dialysis machines to enhance specialist care for renal patients.
The appeal follows the government’s introduction of free dialysis care under the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
While this initiative is expected to benefit many, KATH warns that its current capacity may be insufficient to meet the anticipated demand.
Through public contributions and internally generated funds, the hospital has already acquired several dialysis machines, increasing the renal unit’s capacity.
This expansion has allowed KATH to triple its dialysis sessions, from 80 per month to 300.
However, the hospital’s management fears the growing demand for free dialysis could strain its resources.
Speaking at the Second Edition of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Management-Senior Specialist/Consultants Consultative Forum in Kumasi on November 21, Chief Executive Officer Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah highlighted the urgent need for strategic partnerships to support healthcare delivery at KATH.
