President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has inaugurated the Tema-Mpakadan Standard Gauge Railway Line marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s railway modernisation efforts.
He has also inaugurated two Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) trains. The newly completed 97-kilometre standard gauge railway line connects seven stations along the Tema-Mpakadan route.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to phase out outdated narrow gauge rail systems and replace them with more efficient and modern infrastructure.
The two DMU trains, procured at a cost of $4.2 million, are designed specifically for the standard gauge railway and are expected to enhance passenger transport along the corridor.
The railway line is expected to drive economic growth by facilitating trade, reducing road congestion, and creating jobs in the transportation and logistics sectors
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Friday, November 22, President Akufo-Addo stressed that his administration, through the Ministry of Railway Development, has successfully revived the country’s railway sector.
He stated that the government has implemented modern railway systems, including the Kojokrom to Manso line, Manso to Huni Valley, and the Kumasi rail network, among others.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted that this development would help ease the burden on road transport.
John Peter Amewu, Minister for Railway Development added that the the railway line and diesel multiple-unit trains would reduce travel time from Tema to Mpakadan from three hours to under an hour.
He further noted that individuals traveling from Akosombo, through Afienya to Tema, will greatly benefit from this project.
