The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has accused Deputy Minister of Information, Sylvester Tetteh, of unlawfully demolishing its staff bungalows at Weija.
GBC claims the demolition proceeded despite their objections, prompting the involvement of the police to intervene and halt the exercise.
In an interview with Channel One News, GBC’s Director of Legal Services, John Kwame Waja, explained that Tetteh had initially approached GBC management to request assistance in securing a portion of land for the construction of a community school.
Waja said GBC’s Director-General, Professor Amin Alhassan, instructed the estate team to inspect available land, which they did.
However, Tetteh chose a different site and, in the process of preparing it for construction, demolished a bungalow that belonged to GBC.
Tetteh, who was invited to address the issue, did not respond. Waja emphasized that GBC is determined to prevent the Deputy Minister from proceeding with his project.
“At GBC, we come directly when it comes to sectorial ministries, we come under Information, and he is a deputy minister. When we were serving him a letter, we copied the sector minister. So GBC had no other way than to leave the matter in the hands of the police to deal with it.
“We are going to ensure that he doesn’t build there. GBC as an institution will ensure that he doesn’t put up that property there because we feel that he has embarrassed us and compromised management.
“He hasn’t even shown the Director-General the respect to come and find out why the Director-General was calling him. Don’t forget that we have workers living in that vicinity. For anything that is to go on, we need to ensure that their interest and safety is not compromised.”
Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Information, Sylvester Tetteh, is scheduled to address the press on the matter on Friday, November 22, 2024.
