The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on security agencies and relevant stakeholders to act with professionalism to ensure peace and stability before, during, and after the 2024 general elections.

The appeal was made during a police briefing with representatives of all political parties on preparations for the upcoming polls.

Edward Omane Boamah, the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, stressed the importance of maintaining peace as a foundation for addressing Ghana’s economic and developmental challenges.

“This meeting is for us to be briefed by the security agencies. So, we reserve our comments until we hear from the security agencies. Except to say that, we expect professionalism. So that the peace and stability of our dear nation can be assured before, during, and after the December 7 elections. It is only when we ensure peace and stability that we can fix our troubled economy and country,” he stated.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on the other hand, called for heightened surveillance ahead of the December 7 polls, citing intelligence reports indicating plans by certain individuals to incite violence during the elections.

Justin Frimpong Kodua, the General Secretary of the NPP also proposed strict monitoring of motorbike use on election day. He referenced a chaotic incident during the Assin North by-elections as a basis for his concern.

“No one should be above the law, and on December 7, violence should not play any role in our elections and we want the police to ensure peace during the polls.

“We have picked up intelligence that some people are planning to cause chaos in the Ashanti region. The use of motorbikes on December 7, in the past, we realised that people use motorbikes to cause trouble and so we want to know whether people will be allowed to freely use motorbikes around polling stations.”
