The Minister of Works and Housing, who doubles as the Vice Chair of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Manifesto Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has stated that the inauguration of projects is part of a larger track record.
This follows the government’s inauguration of the Flowerpot Interchange, the Bank Square, and over 80 educational projects on Tuesday, November 19, Wednesday, November 20, and Thursday, November 21, respectively.
In an interview on Channel One TV‘s Citiuation Room, Nkrumah opined that the inauguration of projects shortly before an election does not guarantee victory in the election. However, these activities, when undertaken, grant the public the opportunity to assess the sitting government.
According to the Works and Housing Minister, a political party or candidate’s success in relation to infrastructure is not defined by what is done a few weeks before the elections but rather by what has been done within the period.
“I don’t think everybody should be under the impression that commissioning of projects alone in the weeks leading up to the elections will do any magic. It just forms part of a plethora of activities that you embark upon in a bid to send a message to the public that this particular political tradition has delivered, is delivering, and will deliver on the most important thing to you.”
“If over the four-year period, you haven’t delivered much on infrastructure and you wait till the tail end to try and commission four or five projects with the view of convincing the public, the public will not be fooled by it.
“The commissionings are just part of a bigger track record. If your track record on infrastructure speaks well for you, then the commissioning will just help to be the icing on the cake. If your track record on infrastructure does not speak well for you, then it will be an exercise in futility.”
He added that the 80 new school projects that were commissioned on Thursday, November 11, are not the only projects the Akufo-Addo-led administration has commissioned since 2017, indicating that the sitting government has a good track record in the infrastructural domain.
