The Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) has called off its ongoing strike in response to the perceived failure of the government to address prolonged concerns about their conditions of service.
This follows a meeting with the National Labour Commission on Wednesday to commence negotiations over the demands of the striking union.
In an interview with Channel One News, the General Secretary of TEWU-TUC, King James Azortibah explained that union members have till Monday, November 25 to resume work.
“The outcome of the meeting today was that we should go back. There was a directive from the National Labour Commission that we did not meet the 7-day mandate to be able to hold a strike…We thought our demands were pressing and need to come to the fore. We respect their order and their directive.
“We are taking steps to immediately call our structures to inform them, get approval, ask our rank-and-file members to endeavour to report to work. By Monday, we expect every TEWU member to be at post,” he stated.
Meanwhile, TEWU-TUC had expressed deep frustration over delays in concluding, signing, and implementing revised conditions of service for workers under the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana Library Authority, the Museums and Monuments Board, as well as Public Technical and Traditional Universities.
The union emphasised that negotiations for these reviews have dragged on for years, leaving their members dissatisfied.
National Labour Commission (NLC) however, summoned the TEWU-TUC, along with relevant stakeholders, to a meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
