The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama says the next NDC government will prioritise the revitalisation of the Akwatia Ghana Consolidated Diamond company and make it work again.
According to him, his government will ensure the speedy adjudication of the GCD court issue and bring it to a logical conclusion for it to provide jobs to thousands of residents.
Addressing a mini rally at Boadua as part of his 5-day tour of the region, he urged the electricity company of Ghana to immediately reinstate the GCD transformer which was taken away from the area and restore power to the area.
He assured the residents of Akwatia that if the electricity company of Ghana fails to resolve the power issue, he will personally see to the restoration of power on 7th January immediately after he’s sworn into office.
“Once NDC come into office, we will ensure that GCD starts working again. Once GCD starts operation, it can employ more than 1000 people in Akwatia. Unfortunately, since GCD is not in operation, the transformer that was servicing GCD and the smaller towns around have been taken away. For 6 months, these towns do not have electricity.
“I know that ECG has not heeded to your call but I believe that as I address the matter today, the transformer will be returned so you get electricity. Standing here in Akwatia, Boadoa, I call on the ECG to bring a transformer to restore electricity for those who live around GCD. However, if this is not done, don’t worry, the time has come for NDC to assume power on 7th January.
“Immediately after the swearing-in at Independence Square, a transformer will be brought here the next day”, he stated.
A former worker of the now-defunct Ghana Consolidated Diamonds (GCD), Godfred Kojo Kumi, has in an interview on Channel One TV’s The Constituency on October 15, 2024, made an urgent appeal to the government, requesting action to revive the once-thriving diamond mine.
He highlighted the mine’s historical significance and the benefits it once brought to the local community and beyond.
Kumi noted that GCD was once the largest diamond mine in West Africa, a vital contributor to the country’s economy, and a key source of employment and skills training for the community.
He expressed disappointment over the current state of the mine, which has been dormant for years, and urged the government to take swift steps to restore its operations.
