Joyce Bawah Mogtari, the Spokesperson for the John Mahama Campaign Team, has expressed optimism about the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s prospects in the Eastern Region ahead of the December 7, 2024, elections.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on November 20, 2024, she predicted significant gains for the NDC in a region traditionally dominated by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Acknowledging the NPP’s stronghold in the region, where President Nana Akufo-Addo hails from, Bawah noted that the NDC is determined to make inroads.

“I believe strongly that come December 7, 2024, all Ghanaians will be queuing to elect John Dramani Mahama into office and the Eastern Region is no exception. Remember that even in times past we had just about 7 seats in the region.

“I am convinced that this time around is going to improve upon our fortunes and the NDC is poised to do a lot better than it has done in the Eastern Region in the last few years. Even though Nana Addo apparently hails from the Eastern Region,” she stated.

The Eastern Region played a pivotal role in the NPP’s success in previous elections. Out of the 33 parliamentary seats, the NPP won 26, while the NDC secured seven in the 2020 general elections.

In the presidential race, President Akufo-Addo secured 752,061 votes (60.8%) in the region, while John Mahama garnered 470,999 votes (38.08%).

However, the NDC is confident of narrowing this gap significantly in the upcoming election.
