The National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) has expressed disappointment over the lack of interest shown by parliamentary candidates in participating in constituency-level dialogues.

This concern was raised by the Chairperson of the NCCE, Kathleen Addy, during a press briefing in Accra on November 20, which forms part of the commission’s election programming.

Addy voiced concerns over the minimal participation of parliamentary candidates in civic engagement forums and debates organised by the commission.

She emphasised that these platforms were vital for fostering transparency, addressing pressing community issues, and enabling voters to make informed decisions.

“It is unfortunate that candidates decide not to participate. It amounts to waste. So again, we are imploring the parliamentary candidate and the political parties to ensure that these activities particularly the dialogues for the parliamentary candidates in the constituencies are utilised so that democracy is deepened in our country.”

The Chairperson further urged the electorate to reject any vote-buying attempts during the December elections. This follows reports from the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) highlighting instances of vote buying in some regions ahead of the December 7 polls.

“There is no free money anywhere. Wherever the money is coming from, it is going back with interest and ultimately, we the citizens will pay the bitter price in the form of truncated development. So, it works against our interest to continue to support this culture.”
