The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Sekondi Constituency, in the Western Region, has expressed strong confidence in retaining the parliamentary seat in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Sekondi has historically been an NPP stronghold, with the party holding the parliamentary seat since 1996.

In the 2020 general elections, Andrew Egyapa Mercer secured a significant lead, garnering 17, 259 votes compared to the 10,310 votes polled by the NDC’s Charles Hagan. On the presidential front, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo also dominated, receiving 17,807 votes against John Dramani Mahama’s 9,789.

Isaac Donkor, the Communications Officer for the constituency, while speaking on the Community Forum on Channel One TV, stated that the party’s track record and the performance of the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Andrew Egyapa Mercer, place them in a commanding position.

“As for the chances of winning, I will say we are 80% sure that we will win the seat back. The work that our member of parliament has done in the constituency shows clearly that we are on top,” he stated.

For the 2024 elections, the NDC has fielded Blay Nyameke Armah to challenge the incumbent MP. However, the NPP remains optimistic that their candidate’s development efforts and engagement with the constituency will ensure a comfortable victory.
