Some residents in the Sekondi Constituency have expressed their disappointment and frustrations at the performance of their Member of Parliament, Andrew Egyapa Mercer.
According to them, they had high expectations for which reason they voted for him to be their MP. However, for the past eight years, he has contributed very little to their development.
Joseph Agyakwei, a resident of Sekondi, criticised Egyapa Mercer, who also serves as the Minister for Tourism and Creative Arts, for failing to address frequent power outages in the area.
“Egyapa has disappointed us. He got the opportunity to be the deputy minister for energy, out of the many politicians from the Western Region, at least he should ensure that we have constant light. But nothing. And he expects me to vote for him again. For what reason? I will vote against him this time,” he stated.
Kwame Peter, a taxi driver, highlighted the challenges faced by drivers in the constituency.
“Our work as drivers has been difficult now. The price of fuel, spare parts and all the things about our work as drivers have become very difficult. I will also add that a major challenge we have here is our shed. Any time it rains, all of us here will have to run and seek shelter in our cars. The ceilings are all destroyed. It was built for us by the late Rawlings in the year 2000. Since then, we have not seen any development. If Agyapa Mercer says he has brought development, hasn’t he seen this one as well?
“We are always stranded anytime it rains. He should come and fix that for us. Anytime he talks about development, is he referring to the AstroTurf they constructed? Then that is not development enough. Let us look at Ajumako. It used to be a seat for the NPP. They voted for Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and the place has developed. In Winneba, it used to be a seat for the NDC, Afenyo Markin took over and we are seeing development. So, I think it is time we vote for change,” he stated.
Another resident, Madam Comfort, echoed similar sentiments, questioning Mercer’s contributions over his eight-year tenure.
“We voted for Mercer and he has been on the seat for eight years. He hasn’t done anything for us. He has indeed disappointed us. We must change him and bring Armah Blay Nyameke. He hasn’t been an MP before that for a fact. He has contributed massively to the community. He gave some of the traders interest-free loans. This shed was put up by the NDC, so at least we expected him to add on to the developments in the area, but nothing. For the past 20 years, we have been voting for NPP but we are getting nothing,” she stated.
