The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, has weighed in on the poor performance of Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, attributing their struggles to the current state of the country under the NPP administration.

Speaking at a rally in Akim Oda as part of his 5-day tour of the Eastern Region, Mahama urged Ghanaians to vote for change in the upcoming elections.

He suggested that a new government would restore both the Black Stars’ success and the overall happiness of the nation.

“The Black Stars that managed to entertain us has been ruined. The Black Stars for the past 20 years participated in every match at AFCON but we couldn’t even qualify this time. War-stricken Sudan has qualified for AFCON but Black Stars couldn’t.

“All this is due to the bad governance we have endured for 8 years but democracy gives us the chance to bring change in governance every four years. By God’s grace on 7th December, we are going to use our thumbs to bring change”, he stated.

The Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 African Cup of Nations for the first time in 20 years. The senior national team picked up only three points from six games marking one of the worst periods in Ghana’s history.
