The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, has called for the responsible use and maintenance of the newly commissioned Flower Pot Interchange.
The minister cautioned against the indiscriminate placement of kiosks and containers, which he said could tarnish the visual appeal of the interchange.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the minister appealed to the municipal assemblies overseeing the area—Ledzokuku and Ayawaso West Wuogon—to ensure cleanliness and orderliness around the interchange.
“We also share the responsibility to maintain and use these resources wisely. In this light, I would like to urge the municipal assemblies, particularly Ledzorkuku, and Ayawaso West Wuogon, under whose jurisdiction this interchange falls, to ensure that this area is kept clean.
“Additionally, I don’t want to see kiosks, and containers littered around. It will destroy the beauty that we are witnessing and commissioning today,” he stated.
The Flower Pot Interchange, a significant infrastructure project, is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity within the Greater Accra Region.
This development will streamline movement between areas like Cantonments and Burma Camp to East Legon, Spintex, and Tema, significantly enhancing residents’ quality of life.
Key features include an 802-meter dual carriageway viaduct surfaced with asphalt, a 140-meter ramp from Shiashie onto the viaduct towards Airport Hills, and an 80-meter ramp connecting the viaduct to the Motorway towards Tema.
The GH¢677,839,999.5 interchange also incorporates a newly constructed road through the old East Legon tunnel, a 200-meter link from Cantonments via the Giffard Road interchange, a redesigned Flower Pot roundabout, pedestrian walkways along the flyover, and road accessories like streetlights, markings, and traffic signals.
Initiated on March 7, 2017, the project was handled by China Railway No. 5 Engineering Gh. Ltd, with Deoke Consult Ltd as the consultant. It spanned 93 months and was financed by the Afrexim Bank and the Government of Ghana.
