The Greater Accra Region holds immense influence in Ghana’s political landscape, with a population surpassing 4 million, according to the 2020 census conducted by the Ghana Statistical Service. This year, the stakes are even higher as 4.2 million registered voters are expected to cast their ballots during the December elections, making the region the largest voting bloc in the country.

With 34 constituencies, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) are fiercely competing to consolidate or expand their foothold in the region.

A Historical Perspective

In the 2012 elections, John Mahama of the NDC secured a victory in Greater Accra with 1,125,751 votes, representing 52.31% of the total votes cast. His rival, Nana Akufo-Addo of the NPP, garnered 1,009,787 votes (46.92%).

However, fortunes shifted in 2016 when Akufo-Addo turned the tables, winning the region with 1,062,157 votes (52.42%) against Mahama’s 946,048.

The trend of alternating dominance continued in 2020, with Mahama reclaiming the region. Despite this regional victory, he fell short of winning the overall presidency, reinforcing the notion that success in Greater Accra does not necessarily guarantee national triumph.

The 2024 Elections: A Decisive Contest

As December approaches, political analysts identify the Greater Accra Region as a critical battleground with the potential to influence the national outcome. Key constituencies, such as Adentan and Ayawaso West Wuogon, are shaping up to be decisive in determining the direction of the region’s votes.

In Adentan, residents are vocal about their expectations for their next Member of Parliament, with economic and social concerns dominating conversations. Their collective voice could significantly impact the constituency’s results.

Meanwhile, Ayawaso West Wuogon remains a hotspot as Lydia Seyram Alhassan of the NPP faces a strong challenge from John Dumelo of the NDC. Voters in this constituency are prioritizing candidates who resonate with their needs and demonstrate a commitment to addressing their concerns.

Strategic Moves by the NPP and NDC

Both major parties are sparing no effort in their quest to dominate Greater Accra.

NDC Regional Chairman Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore revealed that the party has rolled out comprehensive strategies aimed at clinching a decisive victory. “We are focused on connecting with the grassroots and addressing the pressing needs of the people,” he stated.

On the other hand, Titus Glover, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, is confident in the NPP’s track record. He believes the party’s achievements in infrastructure, education, and healthcare will resonate with voters. “Our commitment to the people is evident, and we are ready to secure their trust again in December,” he affirmed.

The Stakes in 2024

As the countdown to election day intensifies, the Greater Accra Region remains the epicentre of political activity. With its history of swinging between the two major parties, the region’s results are likely to play a pivotal role in shaping Ghana’s political future.

For the candidates and their parties, the task is clear: convince voters not only with promises but with a demonstrable commitment to addressing their pressing needs and aspirations.
