Nana Akomea, Vice Chairman of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s Campaign Team, has dismissed claims that the NPP flagbearer is struggling to connect with supporters in the Ashanti Region.
Akomea maintained that the party’s message has been warmly received in the region and across the country, rejecting assertions by critics, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC), that Dr. Bawumia’s campaign is faltering in the NPP’s stronghold.
Critics have suggested that Dr. Bawumia’s extended time in Ashanti is a strategy to win back voters disillusioned by economic challenges and insufficient infrastructure development.
They further claim the campaign has faced underwhelming turnouts in some areas, prompting a reliance on endorsements, such as that of former President J.A. Kufuor.
In an interview on Channel One TV’s Face to Face, Akomea refuted these allegations, emphasizing that the campaign’s focus on specific regions, including Ashanti, is based on constituency density rather than any perceived weakness. He reiterated the campaign’s confidence in its performance in the region.
“Who said the campaign is not looking good in the Ashanti Region? Have you been monitoring and does this look like a campaign that is suffering? I heard one or two people interpreting Bawumia’s two weeks in the Ashanti Region as a sign that there’s a problem in the Ashanti Region. And those people say they are political marketers.
“They don’t know what they are talking about. I’m a practical politician and not a theorist, I know that your stronghold should always take more of your time. Ashanti region has not taken a disproportionate amount of Bawumia’s time. If you have been following the campaign of Bawumia, you will see that he does three constituencies in a day.
He added, “In the main campaign, he’s still doing three constituencies in a day. So the amount of time he spends in a region depends on the constituencies. Ashanti region has 47 constituencies, if he’s spending three constituencies in one day, to cover the 47, he needs 15 plus days. So the campaign in the Ashanti region is not different. It just depends on the number of the constituencies and he’s doing three in one day.
“So what is the basis of anybody saying that he’s spending a disproportionate time in the Ashanti region? He spent the same time in the Greater Accra region, Eastern region.”
