The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for the immediate removal of Brigadier General Michael Kwadwo Opoku, the General Officer Commanding Central Command, accusing him of being a ‘threat to peaceful elections.’

At a press conference on Tuesday, November 19, NDC National Communications Director Sammy Gyamfi questioned President Akufo-Addo’s decision to promote Opoku from Colonel to Brigadier General, suggesting that the move was part of a plot to rig both the December 2 special voting and December 7 general elections.

Gyamfi claimed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) plans to use Opoku to oversee vigilantism activities during the elections. He further referenced the violence during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, accusing Opoku of orchestrating the chaos.

“Ladies and Gentlemen in Brigadier General Micheal Opoku, we have an officer with a notorious track record unbecoming of the command he holds. This dubious character carries the mayhem and brutality he supervised at Ayawaso West Wuogon as a badge of dishonour. A person like him has no place in the current environment where Ghanaians are calling for violence-free elections”

“Given his history, we in the NDC call for his immediate removal from his position as General Officer Commanding for Central Command. Miscreants like that should not be allowed anywhere near the security architecture of the impending general elections”

“The NDC has received reliable intel to the effect that Brigadier General Opoku is responsible for the training of NPP thugs at Asutuare Military Camp and other places and he plans to clothe these bandits in military apparel to unleash violence on NDC agents, supporters and innocent civilians on 7th December 2024 and 2nd December 2024 the special voting day

“I believe that every reasonable man will agree with us that this man is a threat to the peace and stability of Ghana and a threat to peaceful elections in Ghana”, he stated.

He called on the Chief of Defence Staff to institute investigations and bring Brigadier General Opoku to book.
