The Electoral Commission (EC) has indicated that it is prepared to conduct elections in the Bawku Central constituency and other nearby constituencies despite security concerns in the area.

This beats earlier suggestions from a section of Ghanaians that residents of the area might not be able to exercise their franchise on December 7 due to the conflict in the area.

Speaking to Citi News, the Upper East Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, William Obeng Adarkwa, indicated his outfit is working hand in hand with the security agencies to conduct smooth and peaceful elections in the area.

“We are prepared for the elections because you know that the situation in Bawku is purely a security matter and when it comes to such matters, it is the Ghana Police Service that is in charge of such matters and so we are collaborating with them, and so we are going to continue to train our officials and give them the necessary skills that will allow us to conduct the elections peacefully under the law.

“The police are in charge, and so far, we have not had any adverse information from them telling us that it cannot be done, and so we are preparing for the election.”
