Goosie Tanoh, Chairman of the Employment and Job Creation for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Manifesto Committee has raised concerns about the escalating unemployment crisis in Ghana.

Speaking on the Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, Goosie Tanoh emphasised that the current job sector challenges are a reflection of the broader economic crisis facing the nation.

Tanoh pointed out that when the NDC left power, the unemployment rate was 8.4%. However, this figure has surged to 14.7% under the current administration.

“The reality is that the crisis in the job sector is the reflection of the overall crisis in the economy. When NDC left power the job unemployment rate was 8.4%, today it’s 14.7%. put in figures it was about one million people unemployed in 2016, 2017. Today it is 2.1 million people unemployed,” he stated.

He further explained that each year, approximately 308,000 people enter the workforce, but only about 120,000 are able to secure jobs, leading to a continuous increase in the number of unemployed individuals.

Delving deeper into employment statistics, Tanoh revealed that out of the 11.9 million Ghanaians who are employed, 8.2 million are in vulnerable employment.

“What you are seeing essentially is that every year about 308,000 people enter the workforce and only about 120,000 can get jobs. So each year you are basically adding to the unemployed figures.

“When you actually go deeply into the employment statistics you will notice that of the 11.9 million Ghanaians who are employed 8.2 million of them are in vulnerable employment. that is what we call the working poor. These are people who wake up and get some work to do today the next day they have no work no working conditions, they have very low productivity, low incomes and so on,” he explained.

This situation, according to Tanoh, results in low national productivity and limits the country’s ability to generate growth and support real livelihoods.
