The atmosphere was filled with joy and excitement as the Nayiri warmly welcomed his brothers, the Mossi people, into his kingdom.
The Mossi are cousins to the Mamprusi, Dagomba, and Nanumba people, all part of the Mole-Dagbani Kingdom. In a gesture of unity and brotherhood, the Overlord has allocated a parcel of land for the Mossi to establish their kingdom in the region. This move is intended to promote peace and further strengthen the bond among the kingdoms.
The Mole-Dagbani Kingdom is vast, comprising several tribes, including the Mamprusi, Dagomba, Nanumba, and Mossi people. The Mossi trace their ancestry to a woman named Yomtori, who married in Burkina Faso, giving rise to the Mossi tribe. Over the years, these tribes have maintained strong relationships, no matter where they are.
In the Mole-Dagbani tradition, male and female cousins are considered playmates. This cultural connection means that whenever a Mossi man meets a Mamprusi, Dagomba, or Nanumba man, they engage playfully, reflecting their shared heritage.
Although the Mossi predominantly reside in Burkina Faso, they lack a formal kingdom in Ghana. To address this and foster closer ties, the Overlord of Mamprugu, Nayiri Mahami Bohagu Sheriga, has granted them land to settle and establish their kingdom.
During a sod-cutting ceremony to unveil the land, the Nayiri, speaking through his secretary, urged the Mossi people to settle peacefully and avoid conflicts.
“The Nayiri is appealing to all that this is a traditional issue and if they hear of any issue they should look at it traditionally. If Ya-Naba and Bimbilla-Naba are in support, there shouldn’t be any problem anywhere because he has not asked him to exercise his authority over other established Mossi chiefs.
“But they must collaborate because, with one voice, it’s very powerful. He did that for all the Mossis to come together under his leadership. He is not asking that they should go and deskin the existing Mossi King and establish a new one. He is asking all Mossis should cooperate with him so we have a peaceful Mossi kingdom.”
The Mossi leaders expressed their gratitude, noting that this gesture has strengthened the bond between them and their brothers.
“The burkinabees are settlers. They moved from this town to settle in Burkina Faso. Once you start from a place, you are going to end the way you started from. This is why we are here today. We want everyone to know that Mossis, we are here today, we are here tomorrow. These are our people”
The North East Regional Minister, Hon. Yidana, used the occasion to call for peaceful elections. He particularly appealed to the youth to refrain from being used by politicians to incite violence.
” I appeal to the teaming youth of Ghana particularly those from the North East Region to be peace-loving. Let’s be civil and temperate with our language so that at the end of the day when we are done with the elections, we will live happily together
The event brought together Mossi representatives from Burkina Faso, including the Burkina Faso Ambassador to Ghana.
This development marks a significant step in strengthening the relationship between the Mossi people and their brothers. The Mossi have announced plans to begin developing the land soon. Already, the Yaa Naa has gifted Kanvli village to the Mossi, encouraging them to select a Mossi chief for the community.
