Executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Manhyia South Constituency are protesting against remarks made by Dela Edem, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, which they deem offensive to former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Despite the NDC issuing an official statement condemning the comments and apologising, NPP supporters in Manhyia South and other constituencies have given Edem a 24-hour ultimatum to retract his statements and offer an apology on the same platform where the remarks were made.
Supporters in Manhyia South took to the streets to voice their displeasure, warning that they would resist any attempts to undermine senior NPP members.
The Manhyia South Constituency Secretary of the NPP reaffirmed their commitment to defending the legacy of former President Kufuor.
“That clearly shows that the whole issue is orchestrated. Dela Edem made those unsavoury statements against the former president a few days ago. The NDC has not released that everyone, not only Ashantis, I am a typical northerner, but I am not happy about the statement by NDC through Dela Edem. So, the NDC coming out to disassociate themselves from the statement is a clear Orchestrated attempt.
“We want Dela Edem to come out clearly on the same platform to apologise to His Excellency John Agyekum Kufour who will be on record as one of the best presidents Ghana has ever had.”
The NDC has condemned remarks made about former President John Agyekum Kufuor, describing them as “unsavoury and distasteful.”
The controversy stems from a viral video in which Dela Edem, a member of the NDC’s communications team, made offensive comments suggesting that Mr. Kufuor’s use of a wheelchair was due to a curse.
In a statement shared on social media, Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s National Communications Officer, extended a formal apology to Mr Kufuor on behalf of the party.
The statement further noted that Dela Edem has also personally apologised to the former president. The NDC expressed hope that the retraction and apologies would bring the matter to a close.
