Election 2024: Bawumia promises affordable data and mobile phones

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to make mobile phones and data more affordable for Ghanaians if elected president.

Speaking during a campaign event in the Nhyiaeso constituency in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Bawumia announced plans to waive import duties on mobile phones.

He explained that this initiative aims to make mobile devices more accessible, particularly for the youth, who rely on them for education, business, and communication.

Dr. Bawumia also highlighted his vision to position Ghana as a leading digital hub in Africa. He emphasized that the next NPP administration would significantly invest in the telecommunications sector to reduce the cost of data and enhance internet access nationwide.

“I know that everyone likes Mobile Phones so, therefore, I am going to decrease the prices of mobile phones, there will be no duties on Mobile Phones imports.

“We are eliminating the import duties on Mobile Phones so that Mobile phones will be Affordable. And also we are going to bring down the cost of data for our youth”.

This promise forms part of a broader strategy by the NPP to integrate technology into Ghana’s development framework and empower citizens through improved digital infrastructure.
