Residents of Amasaman in the Greater Accra Region have voiced growing frustration over rising fuel costs, surging prices of goods, and deteriorating roads in the constituency.

Speaking during Channel One TV’s Community Forum on Monday, November 18, they lamented how these challenges are deepening economic hardships and shaping their perspectives on governance ahead of the December 7 general elections.

Drivers at the Amasaman Taxi Rank were particularly vocal, citing the unbearable strain of skyrocketing fuel prices and expensive spare parts on their livelihoods. Many expressed that these economic difficulties would influence their voting decisions.

David Dotse, a taxi driver, described the dire situation, explaining how constant petrol price hikes have worsened the financial struggles of drivers. He added that the poor state of roads in the area leads to higher fuel consumption and frequent vehicle repairs, further straining their finances.

“We are barely surviving. The roads are terrible, and fuel keeps getting more expensive. It’s hard to make ends meet,” Dotse told Channel One TV’s Philip Nii Lartey.

“The price of petrol has increased astronomically which has worsened our economic situation and that has made life difficult for us. The road is not good and that also increased the petrol consumption.”

The rising cost of building materials is another pressing concern for the residents. Edem Gokah, a resident, expressed his disappointment over the surging prices of essential construction items like cement and iron rods.

“The cost of building materials such as cement and iron roads have increased. I had saved money hoping that prices would go down but they kept increasing. A bag of cement is currently selling beyond GH¢100 mean.”

Peter Acquaye who is also a taxi driver at the station said the “system is so hard for us and the price of fuel has increased. Prices used to be less but that has all changed. Though the government has done some, there is still a lot that needs to be done to make life easier for us.”
