Yaw Buaben Asamoa, a leading member of the Movement for Change, has defended Alan Kyerematen’s critique of former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s endorsement of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the best candidate to lead Ghana.
The endorsement, announced on Sunday, November 17, has sparked widespread political debate.
Alan Kyerematen, who leads the Movement for Change and is contesting the 2024 presidential election, expressed his disappointment, citing his longstanding relationship with the former president.
His remarks have drawn mixed reactions, fueling discussions about fairness and impartiality in endorsements.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Monday, November 18, Buaben Asamoa dismissed claims that Kufuor’s support for Dr. Bawumia could undermine the Movement for Change’s campaign, arguing that Alan has the right to respond to comparisons made by the former president.
Buaben added that Alan’s response was a legitimate attempt to highlight his contributions and defend his political track record.
“Kufour has never followed the Movement for Change. He has stayed in the NPP so, why should it worry our campaign? The movement is over a year old, and we have moved throughout this country, campaigning for December 7, 2024, without Kufuor’s support. So, why would we say that it will worry us?
“You cannot determine what and how a candidate responds to anything. Is it right for Kufuor to also compare and say that among the three major candidates, Bawumia is the best? Because that is a comparison. He is saying Alan or Mahama is not the best, but Bawumia is. So, doesn’t Alan also have the right to say what he deserves?
“If Kufuor feels he can arrange an order of merit for candidates who are going for an election, are those candidates also not entitled to project themselves? So, Alan says if you think Bawumia is the best, then don’t compare him to me because the work I have done speaks for itself,” he stated.
