Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has called on Ghanaians to uphold peace and protect the nation’s democracy as the general elections approach.

Addressing journalists on Sunday, November 17, Mr Kufuor emphasized the importance of maintaining a calm and respectful political environment. While acknowledging that he can no longer participate in rallies, he noted his active engagement with the political landscape through radio and television.

The former President cautioned against inflammatory rhetoric or actions that could incite violence or threaten national unity.

He urged all stakeholders to adhere to democratic principles, respect the will of the electorate, and foster a spirit of civic responsibility among voters.

“Let us approach this election with calm, maturity, and a collective commitment to preserving the peace and democracy that Ghana is known for,” he remarked.

“I am not able to move around like I used to, I can’t even go out for rallies but I listen to the radio and I watch the TV as well. The campaigns are on and the various manifestoes have been launched. But the election is about sharing what is on your mind. We shouldn’t add pain that will force us to take actions that are not deserving, which will breed violence.

“Whoever engages in that does not have the progress of the nation at heart. Let us be democratic and respect the Ghanaian citizens. People are watching and listening on election day, we will go and join the queue and peacefully vote for our choice. Whoever gets the majority, we will rally our support behind him as the constitutionally elected president.

“We don’t want the situation where we are changing constitutions like we did in the past. We should let the constitution of the fourth republic function peacefully, he stated.
