A coalition of unemployed veterinary graduates has raised serious concerns about alleged irregularities in the recruitment process at the Veterinary Services Department under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA).
At a press conference held on Saturday, November 15, in Tamale, the group’s spokesperson, Barhama Salifu, accused the ministry of unfair practices in the allocation of employment slots meant for veterinary graduates.
In August 2024, MoFA announced 200 recruitment slots for veterinary graduates from the 2019–2020 batches, a promise fulfilled by the Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.
However, Salifu alleged that only a small fraction of the graduates received appointment letters, with most of the slots reportedly being sold to applicants through backdoor processes.
“Out of the nearly 1,000 unemployed veterinary graduates, only about 2% have been recruited. The rest of us have been left in the dark, despite repeated follow-ups to the ministry,” Salifu stated.
The coalition is calling on the Minister of Agriculture and other relevant authorities to investigate the recruitment scandal, halt the current process, and ensure fairness in the allocation of opportunities.
They also urged the government to address the disparity in employment to prevent further disenfranchisement of Ghanaian youth.
With the December 7 general elections approaching, the group emphasised the importance of choosing leaders who value integrity, fairness, and the well-being of citizens.
“We are not spectators; we are citizens of this nation. It is time to restore hope in our democracy and hold public officials accountable,” Salifu said.
The group appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to intervene and resolve the matter promptly, ensuring equal opportunities for all veterinary graduates.
“We stand together for a brighter future, where every Ghanaian youth can reach their full potential,” Salifu added.
