Traditional leaders in Zongo communities in the Ashanti Region have intensified engagements with the leadership of the major political parties aimed at averting possible violence in the various communities across the country ahead of the elections.
The Zongo Traditional Council of Chiefs has condemned recent clashes between members of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) and the New Patriotic Party(NPP) at Ejura in the Ashanti Region and Mamobi in the Greater Accra Region.
The Traditional leaders have emphasised the need for all stakeholders to play their roles in ensuring peaceful elections in December. They stressed that violence should not have a place, especially in the Zongo communities, before, during, and after the elections.
Recent violent clashes between some NDC and NPP supporters at Mamobi and Ejura have reignited concerns about the need to caution political parties and their supporters.
Members of the Council have called on the Electoral Commission to ensure transparency in its conduct of the election. The Council expressed concerns about violent disturbances in Bawku and pledged spiritual support for a lasting solution. It says it is committed to reaching out to political parties for a more peaceful dialogue.
Secretary of the Zongo Traditional Council of Chiefs in the Ashanti Region, Alhaji Abdul Mummin Abubakar Ali, addressed a news conference in Kumasi, on Friday, November 15.
“The primary essence of all political parties and being a member of that party is to bring development to Ghanaians. No political party can succeed in the atmosphere of violence and anarchy. Nothing about politics is worth killing someone or injuring ourselves as brothers and sisters of the same community. Let’s not make politics divide us.
“We should refrain from insulting each other and respect everyone’s views regardless of their political affiliation after all it is a game of one man one vote. While it is important to vote on the voting day, we in Zongo should do so peacefully and abide by the rules and regulations of the Electoral Commission.
“As Muslims, our religion Islam requires that we accommodate, tolerate and respect other people’s views. We believe that Allah the Most Gracious has already chosen the person to lead this country”
