Ghana’s Tourism Ambassador, Afua Asantewaa, has revealed plans to make a second attempt at breaking the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest singing marathon this December.
The event is slated for December 21-26, 2024, at Heroes’ Park in Kumasi, near the stadium.
Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show with Kafui Dey last Friday, Asantewaa shared her rigorous preparation process, which includes gym sessions, vocal training, and securing copyright clearances through GHAMRO (Ghana Music Rights Organization) for her song repertoire.
“My determination to achieve this prestigious world record has motivated my return to the glass box this December,” she said, calling on her supporters to keep her in their prayers.
Asantewaa’s first attempt in December 2023 captivated global attention when she sang continuously for 126 hours and 52 minutes, exceeding the current record of 105 hours held by Indian singer Sunil Waghmare. However, Guinness World Records did not ratify the achievement in March 2024, citing non-compliance with their guidelines.
Despite the disappointment, the attempt boosted Ghana’s cultural visibility and tourism sector, drawing thousands to the Akwaaba Village in Accra. Featuring an all-Ghanaian song lineup, it became a celebration of the country’s musical heritage.
For her second attempt, Asantewaa says she has thoroughly reviewed GWR requirements and is collaborating with experts to ensure strict compliance. “We’ve learned valuable lessons from our first attempt,” she explained. “This time, we’re implementing stricter documentation procedures and have assembled a professional team to oversee every aspect of the attempt.”
The decision to host the event in Kumasi highlights the city’s role as Ghana’s cultural capital. Local authorities and the Ghana Tourism Authority have pledged their support, recognizing the event’s potential to boost tourism.
The six-day event coincides with Ghana’s peak tourist season, drawing both locals and members of the diaspora who return for the holidays. Organisers are planning for significant crowds, with enhanced facilities and crowd management systems at Heroes’ Park.
To ensure global reach, the marathon will also be live-streamed, allowing international supporters to witness the historic endeavour.
Asantewaa expressed confidence in the upcoming attempt, stating, “This time, we’re more prepared than ever. Kumasi will be the history stage, and I’m ready to make Ghana proud.”
