An urban planning expert, Dr Bernard Abeiku Arthur, has issued a stark warning about an impending transport crisis in Ghana if immediate action is not taken.
The warning comes as the country’s urban areas continue to experience rapid growth, leading to increased traffic congestion and strain on existing infrastructure.
Commuters in Accra often experience major delays due to severe traffic congestion.
For instance, on Thursday, November 14, commuters were frustrated by prolonged traffic congestion on the Spintex and Obetsebi Lamptey roads.
The gridlock, which began early in the day and stretched into the late hours, frustrated drivers and passengers alike, as many were delayed for hours.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM on Friday, November 15, Dr. Arthur stressed the need for comprehensive and sustainable transportation policies to address the current challenges and prevent future chaos.
Key recommendations he gave included expanding and modernising public transportation systems, improving road networks, and promoting alternative modes of transport and bus systems.
He also insisted on the need for the government to enforce existing transportation policies.
Without these measures, the urban planner warned that Ghana could face severe traffic congestion, increased pollution, and a decline in the quality of life for its citizens.
