James Amoo-Gottfried, Director General of the National Roads Authority, has assured the public that the completion of the Spintex-Flower Pot Road will greatly ease traffic congestion in the area.
Despite efforts by officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service to manage traffic flow, commuters experienced severe gridlock on Thursday, November 14.
The ongoing construction has led to significant frustration, particularly during peak hours.
Drivers expressed hope that the situation would improve once the Flower Pot flyover project is completed.
In an interview with Channel One News on Thursday, November 14, Amoo-Gottfried outlined plans to create an additional exit into Cantonments to help alleviate congestion at the ground level of the Overpass.
He acknowledged that the area often experiences congestion due to the high-speed traffic coming from East Legon and beyond.
“This interchange that we’ve done allows us to convert that barrier to a good edge where we can just move over and change direction. What we have now, starting from the Palace Mall, you can get into the East Legon area which is the northern side of the motorway or you can make a right towards Tema that takes you towards the East. Getting onto the bridge, you can also come from the East side and come to the southern side towards Cantonment or come from the Shiashie side and get onto the bridge.
“We also do realise that, with the efficiency that is likely to bring, we are going to have congestion at both ends, particularly the Cantonments end.
“We are preparing that ground to be able to move into Cantonments and allow the dispersion of the traffic. Originally, we were not too comfortable with that but what you realise studying the system is that most of the vehicles getting close to the Giffard road overpass normally will make a right and go and make a left into Cantoments anyway.
“So what we are trying to do is that at the ground level at the Overpass, we create another exit into Cantonments to be able to relieve the congestion a bit.”
