Beatrice Annan, Deputy Spokesperson for the John Mahama Campaign, has urged Ghanaians not to be swayed by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) claims regarding the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy as the 2024 elections approach.
The NPP has consistently highlighted the Free SHS policy as a flagship initiative implemented since assuming office in 2017, presenting it as a key achievement and a reason to secure re-election.
The party has also warned that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) might discontinue the program if elected.
Speaking on the Point Blank segment of Eyewitness News on Thursday, November 14, 2024, Annan dismissed these claims, reiterating the NDC’s commitment to education. She noted that the NDC introduced the “progressively free SHS” model during its tenure, which laid the groundwork for expanding access to secondary education.
Annan called for an end to the politicisation of education, emphasizing that the NDC prioritizes both access and quality in education. She urged Ghanaians to critically assess the contributions of both parties as they prepare to vote in the 2024 general elections.
“Don’t allow the NPP to blackmail you with free SHS. Free SHS is a very good policy and we in the NDC maintain that we started the progressively free SHS. I vividly recall that when I was in secondary school, and President Kufuor introduced the four-year term, in a record time of 6 months, the NDC when President Mills assumed power built classroom blocks in every secondary school in the then 10 regions of Ghana. It shows you that the NDC is committed to education.
“Under the NDC, we eliminated over 235 schools under trees. We moved the textbook-to-student ratio from 1 student to 4 textbooks to 4 textbooks to 1 student. Also, the GETfund is our greatest legacy to be given to this nation.
“So, we have the capacity to produce quality education, not that but that which should not be reduced for politics. So, let nobody deceive you,” she stated.
