Commuters in Accra experienced major delays on Thursday, November 14, due to severe traffic congestion along the Spintex-Flower Pot Road.

The gridlock, which began early in the day and stretched into the late hours, frustrated drivers and passengers alike, as many were delayed for hours.

The congestion was attributed to ongoing construction at the Flower Pot Interchange, scheduled for completion soon. Once commissioned by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on November 19, the interchange is expected to ease traffic in the area significantly.

Roads Ministry P.R.O Nasir Ahmad Yartey urged commuters to remain patient, assuring them that traffic would improve by Friday, November 15.

Despite these reassurances, Thursday’s situation underscored the immediate challenges. Many drivers reported delays of over two hours, with one driver, Nathaniel, stating, “The traffic will flow once construction is done, but right now it’s really serious—delays can last 30 to 40 minutes.”

Passengers expressed similar frustrations, citing extended commute times that have impacted their daily lives. One passenger remarked, “The traffic is a major disturbance. It used to be manageable, but now we’re getting home so late.”

Vendor activity increased as street sellers took advantage of the stationary traffic to sell goods. In response to the congestion, traffic authorities suggested alternative routes to relieve pressure on the Spintex-Flower Pot Road.

In a related incident, heavy traffic congestion was also reported at the Obetsebi Lamptey Roundabout due to intensified construction on the second phase of the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange project.

Commuters on the Kwame Nkrumah Circle-Kaneshie route experienced delays, with many drivers choosing alternative routes or even completing their trips on foot.

As the holiday season approaches, the Ministry of Roads and Highways is under pressure to expedite the work and alleviate these traffic bottlenecks.

Despite official reassurances, commuters are urging for more immediate traffic management solutions to mitigate the growing frustration.

For now, drivers are advised to plan ahead and explore alternative routes to avoid the worst of the gridlock.

Traffic authorities were on-site to manage the situation, but the sheer volume of vehicles made it difficult to ease the congestion.
