Professor Christopher Gordon, former Director of the Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies at the University of Ghana, has called on all Ghanaians to unite against illegal mining, known locally as galamsey.

Speaking at the “Achimota Speaks” event in Accra on Wednesday, November 13, Professor Gordon emphasized that illegal mining’s destructive impact on water bodies and forests affects everyone, regardless of background, ethnicity, or political affiliation.

He noted that while only a small fraction of the population benefits from galamsey, the environmental and health costs are borne by the entire nation.

“Pollution has no political colour, there are winners and losers. In a galamsey narrative, we have a  few winners and many many losers. The final principle is that no one is safe. If you think you are in Accra and you are safe from what is happening in galamsey areas, you are basically fooling yourself.

“Because if you don’t get it through the food that you are buying from the hinterland, you are taking it in through the air that you are exposed to.”
